Antique adjustable curved plane in brass and metal, German-made equivalent of Stanley No. 113 by NWMF, in good condition with some age-related wear; dimensions 25.5 cm long, 6 cm wide, 14.5 cm high, weight 1.56 kg.
Description from the seller
ANCIENT TOOLS - POPULAR ART
Superb old bendable plane (or flexible-sole plane / compass / circular plane), European equivalent of model No. 113 (historically manufactured by Stanley Rule & Level Co., an American manufacturer founded in 1857).
The brass knob bears the coat of arms of the city of Hamburg (the castle with three towers) as well as the letters N, W, M, F, corresponding to the German manufacturer Norddeutsche Werkzeug- und Maschinen-Fabriken (NWMF).
The Norddeutsche Werkzeug- und Maschinen-Fabriken (NWMF) company was founded in Hamburg in 1919.
The flexible metal sole curves (convexly or concavely) using a front adjustment screw and a rack-and-pinion mechanism. It allows planing, shaping and smoothing of curved wooden surfaces with precision (as in boatbuilding, rounded furniture, or handrails). This collectible tool is particularly ingenious because it avoids the need to own a multitude of fixed-shape planes.
Tool dimensions:
- length = 25.5 cm
- width = 6 cm
- height = 14.5 cm
- weight = 1,560 g
A piece that is part of an important collection of tools
