Charoite was first discovered in 1978 and takes its name from the Chara River in Siberia, Russia.
Its formation is the result of the alteration of limestone deposits by a syenite of the Murun Massif, which produced a potassium feldspar metasomatite. Charoite is present only in a very limited region of Siberia, which makes it even rarer and more precious.
