Art Deco representation of the Immaculate Conception, executed in plaster from a design by Johannes Dommisse. The streamlined design with long vertical lines, geometric folding, and simplified volumes aligns with religious sculpture from the interwar period. Mary is depicted with arms crossed over the chest and stands on a globe with a crescent moon and serpent. Around the base are undulating forms symbolizing the Earth and the waters of creation. The serpent alludes to original sin, while the crescent moon is borrowed from the Apocalypse depiction of the Woman clothed with the Sun.
Johannes Dommisse (1878–1955) was a Delft-born sculptor active in Brussels. He realized numerous religious sculptures and is among the leading representatives of religious Art Deco in Belgium. His work is characterized by a strongly simplified formal language and pronounced verticality.
Height approximately 53 cm; marked Domisse on the base. In good condition with signs of use, small chips and light wear appropriate to age and material.
