Description from the seller
An authentic piece of European history and craftsmanship, this beautiful antique wooden keepsake or tobacco box is a textbook example of World War I "Trench Art" or POW (Prisoner of War) folk art creation. The front panel is hand-inscribed with the prominent military dates 1914, 1915 and the traditional Hungarian soldier's name "PANYI ANDRÁS".
Design & Craftsmanship:
Front Panel: Decorated with charming, hand-painted floral motifs (tempera/thin oil) featuring red petals and yellow centers, typical of Central and Eastern European rustic traditions.
Lid: Features beautiful, geometric hand-carved chip work along the borders, creating a striking contrast with the flat wooden panels.
Interior: Features its original deep reddish-purple interior stained finish, a classic choice for folk furniture of that era to create an inside-outside visual contrast.
Hardware: Equipped with its original hand-cut iron escutcheon (lock plate) and sturdy early 20th-century mortised hinges secured with old flat-head screws.
Condition:Excellent antique condition with an incredible, rich century-old patina. The bottom exhibits natural wood wear, manual plane marks, and a distinct shadow from a long-lost vintage inventory or paper shipping label. Solid structural condition with no modern alterations, preserving 100% of its historical integrity.
