A Louis XVI style auxiliary wooden chest of drawers from France, dating to 1940–1950, with brass handles, four visible drawers including a hidden secret drawer, and vertical side columns; dimensions 65 cm high by 56 cm wide by 39 cm deep, in good used condition.
Description from the seller
It's an auxiliary chest of drawers inspired by Louis XVI, built in wood and articulated around those side columns that add verticality, order, and a distinctly architectural air characteristic of French neoclassicism. The piece combines proportion, symmetry, and refinement, but without losing the warmth of domestic furniture: the wood, polished and slightly satin, lets its grain show clearly, softening the classical severity of the design.
The front is organized into four visible drawers, each with its own decorative language. The upper one stands out for a fine marquetry of ribbons and flowers, a motif typically Louis XVI that introduces delicacy and a feminine touch. The lower drawers, on the other hand, use more sober geometries, with inlays and straight compositions that balance the whole. The bronze handles, crafted with elegance, add shine and depth, acting as small functional jewels.
The side columns, with their carved capitals, are the most distinctive gesture: they turn the chest into a mini-architecture, as if it were a reduced façade. That device is classic of the Louis XVI style, where the furniture’s structure imitates that of a building, seeking order, clarity, and nobility.
The most interesting detail is the secret drawer, discreetly integrated into the composition. This type of feature was common in high-quality furniture, designed to store documents, jewelry, or small valuable objects without altering the visual harmony of the front.
All in all, it is a piece that combines neoclassicism, craftsmanship, and functionality, perfect for an interior that seeks elegance without ostentation.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
