Description from the seller

Grande Italian Alabaster Centerpiece with Lid – Mid-Century – 1960s/1970s

Refined and impressive decorative centerpiece with lid, entirely made in alabaster, Italian craftsmanship traceable to roughly the 1960s/1970s, characterized by generous dimensions, considerable weight, and a stone of extraordinary aesthetic impact.

The form is particularly harmonious: the body, wide and strongly convex, rests on a circular slightly raised base and is completed by a shaped lid with a central handle, also carved and worked in alabaster.

The true protagonist of the work is, however, the extraordinary natural formation of the stone. The warm tones of ivory, cream, honey, and beige are interwoven with gray-brown zones and spectacular natural inclusions bordered by darker lines. In numerous spots these formations assume surprising organic motifs, almost floral, resembling corollas and blossoms naturally drawn in the material.

A particularly dramatic effect that changes when viewing the centerpiece from different angles and makes this specimen absolutely unique, because the veins, transparencies, and inclusions are irreplaceable natural characteristics of the stone.

The interior is also very beautiful, with the rich alabaster structure continuing inside, with veins and formations visible even in the deepest part of the vessel.

The smooth, polished surface further enhances the material’s characteristics and, when struck by light, highlights the different depths and the delicate translucencies typical of alabaster.

The considerable weight of about 3.53 kg immediately conveys the sense of an important, solid, and materially substantial object.

For stylistic characteristics, form, and workmanship, the centerpiece is attributable to Italian decorative production of the late twentieth century, roughly the 1960s/1970s, the period during which alabaster was widely used in the creation of interior furnishings for more sophisticated interiors.

In the absence of marks or labels, it is correctly proposed as Italian manufacture, without attribution to a specific workshop.

Dimensions

Maximum diameter: 22 cm
Overall height with lid: 13 cm
Opening diameter: 11 cm
Weight: about 3,530 g

Interior Design Suggestions

An object with strong decorative presence, ideal as a sculptural centerpiece, but also usable as a refined ornamental container.

An interior designer could perfectly place it on a large dining table, a console, a sideboard, a low table, or within an important bookcase. It would pair particularly well with dark woods, travertine, marble, brass, and fabrics in natural tones.

Its aesthetic also allows it to fit into a Mid-Century setting as well as a contemporary, minimalist, or eclectic interior: the essential form dialogue with modern design, while the incomparable richness of the stone gives it the character of a true collectible sculpture.

The centerpiece is presented in excellent vintage condition, with any minimal signs compatible with the era, material, and craftsmanship. Veins, inclusions, small cavities, and color variations visible are natural alabaster characteristics and contribute to the piece’s uniqueness.

Photographs are an integral part of the description and show in detail the extraordinary natural formation of the stone and its state of preservation.
