Rare Sterling Silver Presentation Plate – Dr. Thornton Brown, Massachusetts General Hospital, 1971

Exceptional sterling silver presentation plate, engraved in 1971 and presented by the staff of Massachusetts General Hospital (M.G.H.) to Dr. Thornton Brown, M.D., then Chief of the Orthopaedic Service.

The plate is engraved:

The recipient, Dr. Thornton Brown (1913–2000), was a distinguished American orthopaedic surgeon and Harvard Medical School professor. He trained at Harvard Medical School and completed his orthopaedic residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and Children’s Hospital. He subsequently became a member of the Harvard Medical School faculty and served at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Dr. Brown served two terms as Chief of the Orthopaedic Service at Massachusetts General Hospital, including from 1970 until 1972 — making the 1971 presentation date particularly significant. During this period he was also Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Harvard Medical School.

Brown was also an important figure in the history of modern orthopaedics. In 1958 he became Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, one of the leading specialist orthopaedic journals in the world, a position he held for twenty years until 1978. The journal’s historical archive specifically credits him with establishing high editorial standards and introducing a structured approach to scientific articles.

He was additionally involved in pioneering work on the biomechanics of the lumbar spine and, together with Dr. Paul Norton, developed the Norton-Brown brace. In 1979, he was elected President of the American Orthopaedic Association, and in 1987 he authored The American Orthopaedic Association: A Centennial History.

The plate therefore represents more than a piece of sterling silver tableware: it is a personal institutional presentation object connected with an important figure in 20th-century American orthopaedic medicine and the history of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.
