Carafe (2) - Crystal - Art Deco

Superb Art Deco crystal decanter tinted violet, dating probably from the interwar period, around the 1920s-1930s. With a particularly elegant presence, it is distinguished by a decidedly geometric silhouette and by the use of violet amethyst crystal whose coloration intensifies in the thicker parts. The set reflects Art Deco taste for architectural volumes, clean lines, and the light play of cut crystal.

The piece features a wide, flattened, polygonal body built around generously faceted geometric planes. The shoulders rise in broad curves to a cylindrical neck, creating a particularly smooth transition between the angular volumes of the body and the more vertical lines of the neck. The thick, strongly faceted base gives the decanter a monumental stance. The stopper is the most spectacular part of the ensemble: cut from a massive volume of violet crystal, it adopts a polygonal shape reminiscent of a stylized gemstone and ends with a pyramidal point. Through its treatment, the stopper becomes almost a miniature sculpture crowning the decanter. This combination of facets, solid volumes, and crystal geometry perfectly matches the Art Deco aesthetic. Amethyst decanters from Czechoslovakia in the 1930s with geometric shapes and faceted stoppers are documented on the specialized market.

The decanter is in excellent overall condition. The crystal retains very good transparency and a particularly bright violet coloration, with beautiful depth variations in the thicker areas. The edges, facets, neck, and stopper are very well preserved, with no chips or visible cracks. Only a few traces of use are visible at the bottom of the decanter, indicating its former use. They remain discreet and do not in any way detract from the piece’s aesthetic balance.

Through its particularly sculptural design, this decanter exemplifies the formal exploration characteristic of Art Deco glass and crystal from the interwar period. At that time, European designers gradually moved away from the floral decorations of Art Nouveau to favor more geometric compositions, monumental volumes, and cutting that directly highlights the optical properties of crystal. The amethyst color fully participates in this exploration: depending on the thickness of the material and the incidence of light, it creates contrasts ranging from delicate rosy-purple to deep violet. Comparable pieces are notably catalogued among Bohême and Czechoslovak productions of the 1930s, although the origin cannot be definitively stated for the present piece.
