Bowl - Uranium glass - OURALINE ART DECO

Elegant Art Deco glass bowl, aubergine (ouraline) dateable likely to the 1930s, whose aesthetic rests entirely on a remarkable pearled decoration obtained directly in the mold. The piece shows a beautiful aquamarine tint in natural light, characteristic of some uranium glass, and reveals under ultraviolet light a green fluorescence that is particularly intense, confirming the presence of uranium in the glass composition. This use of colored, luminous glass, associated with geometric or repetitive patterns achieved by molding, fully fits within the decorative glass production of the interwar period.

The form is particularly harmonious: the bowl rests on a circular slightly raised base and widens progressively toward a broad opening. The whole is rhythmically divided by several registers of small pearls or circular tablets, arranged with great regularity. The pattern appears notably on the wide rim, where several rows of small pearled forms create a delicately textured border, but also around the lower part and at the center of the bottom. The contrast between the perfectly smooth surfaces of the body and these embossed zones produces a remarkable play of light and transparency. The thick glass construction further enhances this effect and gives the bowl an almost sculptural presence. Under UV light, the raised pattern becomes especially spectacular thanks to the uniform fluorescence of the glass.

The condition is excellent. The bowl shows no chips, cracks, or restorations. Only a few traces of use on the center of the interior surface are visible upon close inspection, remaining discreet given the piece’s age. The numerous small molded pearls are perfectly preserved and the edges of the rim remain sharp. The fluorescence under ultraviolet light is particularly bright and uniform, as shown in the photographs.

This piece perfectly illustrates Art Deco’s love of geometric effects, motif repetition, and the optical qualities of molded glass. The pearled pattern is one of the decorative processes used to transform a simple utilitarian shape into a true decorative object, with reliefs multiplying refraction and shimmer effects. The presence of uranium adds an extra dimension: in natural light, the glass maintains a discreet pale green tone, while under UV (395 nm) it becomes an extremely bright fluorescent green, characteristic of uranium glasses produced in the first half of the 20th century. European manufactories, including the great Belgian glassworks, extensively experimented with these colorful compositions during this period, alongside the development of Art Deco pressed glass.
