Description from the seller
Side table dating from the second half of the 19th century (full 1800s), executed in an eclectic Napoleonic III / Louis XV style. In this era French cabinetmaking rediscovered the sinuosity of Baroque lines, enriching them with elaborate decorative motifs. The shaped top and the lower shelf feature refined marquetry work (floral or geometric inlay) executed with prized wood veneers, historically paired with woods such as bois de rose, rosewood, and mahogany. The undershelf frieze is enriched by a substantial gilt bronze ormolu frieze with classical garland motifs. The edge of the top is finished with a protective metal molding. The most distinctive and valuable feature of the piece is represented by the four cast-metal corner uprights. The cabriole legs incorporate elongated female figures (caryatids) at the upper part, which serve as an artistic linkage between the stem and the frieze. The top presents a masterful design of arabesques and naturalistic floral motifs, obtained by pairing several hand-cut woods (such as stained maple, bois de rose, and palissander) to create polychrome shading on a dark background. In good condition, with a few small, negligible marks and the metal needing polishing. I am available to arrange for shipment if needed. Costs are extra.
