This is the original edition published by Xavier Barral Editions and the Centre Georges Pompidou in the first printing of 2003. Remarkable, an artist’s book with numerous sheets of different sizes that are inserted loose and integrated into the same binding. 444 pages with a great many photographs and text. Very fine publisher’s binding illustrated on the cover and on the back cover. In excellent condition, practically like new.

This complete retrospective (at the time) of the artist Sophie Calle was published to accompany the exhibition held at the Centre Pompidou in Paris from November 2003 to March 2004, and it enjoyed considerable success, with the catalogue needing to be reprinted as early as 2004. This book celebrates the breadth and intelligence of her iconoclastic work and also leads to a deeper understanding of her unique artistic vision. Calle’s conceptual work spans many media: photography, storytelling, film and memory, to name a few. Often controversial, Calle’s projects explore voyeurism, intimacy and identity as she secretly investigates, reconstructs and documents the lives of strangers—inviting them to sleep in her bed, following her in a hotel, or tailing her through the city. Taking on multiple roles—detective, documentarian, behavior expert and chronicler—Sophie Calle challenges the boundary between life and art. The book presents Calle’s best-known works, including The Blind, No Sex Last Night, The Hotel, The Address Book, A Woman disappears, etc., as well as lesser-known and earlier projects that had largely escaped public attention. This monumental collection of Calle’s photographs, diary excerpts and video images also includes three critical essays, an interview with the artist and a captivating dialogue with fellow British artist Damien Hirst who dominates the British art scene.
