Historical context
John the Fearless (1371–1419) was a son of Philip the Bold and Margaret of Burgundy. After his father's death he succeeded him in 1404 as Duke of Burgundy. He grew into one of the most powerful and influential sovereigns in France during the final phase of the Hundred Years’ War.
His reign was marked by the power struggle between the Burgundian and Armagnac factions. His conflict with Louis of Orléans culminated in 1407 with the murder of his political rival. In the following years, John shifted alliances and repeatedly expanded his influence in Paris.
In 1419 he attempted to make peace with the dauphin, the future King Charles VII. During a meeting on the bridge at Montereau, John the Fearless was murdered on 10 September 1419. His son Philip the Good succeeded him as Duke of Burgundy.
