Description from the seller
Leaflet from the “Grand Coutumier” – illuminated liturgical manuscript on parchment – France, late Middle Ages - probably 16th century
Rare parchment leaf from a liturgical custom manual, bearing at the top the old mention “Grand Coutumier.”
The document combines liturgical text and square musical notation on red staves. An instruction in old French specifies: “ After the repetition of that antiphon to Benedictus the cantors say: ”, indicating its use to precisely regulate the course of the chant during the office.
Remarkable large historiated illuminated initial, painted in red and blue-green, adorned with vegetal scrolls and enclosing a fantastical animal of the dragon type.
The leaf presents several later annotations and alterations, notably the mention “This is added the second music,” evidence of extended use and adaptation of the manuscript.
France, late Middle Ages, with later annotations and additions. The originating religious establishment could not be identified with certainty.
Old condition: wear, stains, folds, tears and peripheral gaps visible. Beautiful preservation of the colors of the illumination.
Photos are an integral part of the item description and complement its presentation. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The item will be carefully packaged and shipped with tracking number to ensure fast and secure delivery.
