Pair of wall appliques in hand-embossed brass sheet with central small mirrors, dating to the late 18th / early 19th century, Italian origin, in brass and wood, each about 36 x 34 x 3 cm, in discrete condition with wear and probable small missing pieces, electrified in the mid-20th century with white E14 lampholders.
Description from the seller
Pair of wall sconces/mirrored pinwheels in hand-h stamped brass sheet (brass).
Estimated dating: late 18th / early 19th century
Description of the lot
Pair of wall-mounted sconces (originally born as candle holders pinwheels), characterized by a decorative scheme of late Baroque taste. The front part is worked in hand-hammered and chased brass sheet, with acanthus leaf motifs, side rosettes and a background with dense manual punch work. In the center of each element is inserted a small oval mirror, historically used to reflect and amplify the light of the flame. The structure and execution details lead to a presumed dating between the end of the 18th century and the early 19th century. Around the mid-20th century the objects were electrified for modern use. The intervention involved the insertion of white lampholders (E14 socket) on metal tubes and the through-drilling of the wooden base to allow the passage of the brown two-conductor electrical cable. Dimensions (per piece) Height: 36 cm Width: 34 cm Thickness: about 3 cm
Condition and defects (to be observed in photos)
Wear of the silvering: Original finish worn by time, with the underlying brass visible on the reliefs (two-tone patina).
Oxidation of the mirrors: Central glass with widespread dark speckling and natural aging resulting in opacity.
Marks on the back: Wooden support and plaster backing with abrasions, paint loss and aging marks.
Irregularities of the plate: Slight deformations and era-based asymmetries in the hand-hammered brass sheet.
Aged electrical system: Wiring and lampholders dated to the mid-20th century, not recently refurbished.
Careful shipment with tracked professional packaging.
