Description from the seller
Copper statue of Saint Eligius (Saint Elooi)
This beautifully detailed copper statue depicts Saint Eligius, better known colloquially as Saint Elooi (c. 588–660). Before he became bishop of Noyon and Tournai, he was an exceptionally talented goldsmith and mint master, which is why he is revered to this day as the patron saint of all metalworkers, smiths, goldsmiths, and farriers. The saint is portrayed here in his traditional episcopal robes, stately and dignified. At his feet lie his steadfast and highly recognizable attributes: a hammer and an anvil, the ultimate symbol of his craft and his protection over the trade. These kinds of handy figurines were once a common and beloved element in metalworkers’ workshops, believed to bring luck and prosperity to the work. The statue is in a beautiful, authentic condition with a nicely worn patina that gives the copper a wonderful character. Normal signs of age are present, consistent with its likely 20th century origin.
The piece measures 20.5 x 8 x 3.5 cm and weighs 450 g. The item will be packed with the utmost care and shipped worldwide with Track & Trace.
