Description from the seller
Beautiful, richly decorated sugar tongs from the era of the Soviet Union. The item was made of silver 875 and finished with gilding, which, together with traditional Russian niello decoration (a dark alloy filling the engraved patterns), provides a splendid, exceptionally elegant contrast.
The tongs bear intricate, geometrico-floral motifs, characteristic of Soviet artistic craftsmanship of that period.
Item details:
Device type: Sugar tongs (for cubes)
Base material: Silver (fin. 875)
Finish: Gilding, niello technique
Total weight: 40.8 g
Country of origin: USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics)
Period: ca. 1970
Puns and signatures (visible in the photos):
Star with hammer and sickle and 875 – the official Soviet assay mark for silver of fineness 875.
Signature "0СЧ" – factory mark referring to the renowned Severnaya Cherny factory in Veliky Ustyug, famous worldwide for masterful niello works. The digit "0" most likely indicates the production year 1970.
