AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Important pink opaline box / casket with polychrome and gilt decoration, second half of the 19th century.

Elegant and relatively large circular box made of opaline glass, about 16 cm in diameter, featuring a remarkable pale pink coloration paired with an opalescent white interior.

The lid is centered by a very beautiful polychrome gallant scene, depicting a gentleman offering a rose to a young woman in a garden. The characters, their costumes, the Rococo-style furniture, and the landscape are treated with a great wealth of detail.

The scene is surrounded by a delicate border of enameled and gilded relief scrollwork, a decoration that is also found around the circumference of the box.

The box retains its old mount in gilded brass, including collar, hinge and clasp. The white opaline interior creates a remarkable contrast with the pink exterior.

The quality of the glass, the coloration, the metal mount and the enameled decoration are in keeping with the tradition of European decorative opaline productions from the second half of the 19th century, notably those made in Bohemia.

No factory signature having been identified, the piece is intentionally presented without definitive attribution.

Dimensions:
Diameter: approx. 16 cm
Height: approx. 5 cm

Nice overall condition considering its age. Evidence of use, small scratches and occasional wear to the mount and decoration compatible with the piece’s age. The hinge and locking system are visible in detail in the photographs.

The photographs are an integral part of the description.
