Great Buffalo Mask of the Bwa Mossi - The Mossi African art sculptors are known for their polychrome masks worn during festivals and to guard the harvests. These masks, which also fulfil a totemic function, are kept carefully when they are not worn.

Libations are offered to them in exchange for their protection and assistance. The Bwa subgroup is renowned for its large-scale masks such as the buffalo mask, antelope or butterfly. This one is adorned with small birds that are found around the pachyderms. The sculptors have succeeded in blending stylization and realism.
