Provenance

Former private collection of a member of the Wirtz family, Antwerp (Belgium), a family historically active in the travel sector.

According to information directly transmitted by his heir, this object would have been brought back from the Congo in the 1960s and then kept within the family.

The family collection was carefully preserved and presented in a room entirely dedicated, arranged in the spirit of a private cabinet of curiosities, where the works were gathered and highlighted in an environment specially devoted to their display.

Description & Study of the Work

A rare and uncommon anthropomorphic facial mask of the Kifwebe type, attributed to the Luba-Songye cultural area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The tradition of Kifwebe masks constitutes one of the most emblematic expressions of art in the Congo basin. Shared by the Songye and the Luba, it testifies to ancient artistic and cultural exchanges between these populations. Masks of this family stand out in particular for the profoundly geometric organization of the face, structured by lines, rhythms, and contrasts that go far beyond a simple naturalistic representation.

This specimen is distinguished by especially radical abstraction and extraordinary graphic strength. The face, very elongated and almost reduced to a pure oval shape, is entirely organized around three circular openings: two strongly projective eyes and a round mouth occupying the center of the lower part.

Around the eyes are developed powerful concentric circles carved, which seem to spread across the surface of the mask like waves. These curves extend toward the contours of the face before meeting, at the center, a narrow vertical crest marked by regular motifs. The mouth repeats this same concentric principle, creating a remarkable unity between the different parts of the face.

The contrast between the deeply dark background and the ochre-orange lines gives the piece exceptional visual intensity. The sculpture appears to change its reading with distance: from afar, it looks like a nearly abstract graphic sign; up close, the reliefs, tubular eyes, and the projection of the mouth restore the mask’s physical presence.

From the side, its character becomes even more spectacular. Behind the apparent flatness of the face lie the substantial projections of the eyes and mouth, giving the work an astonishingly complex architectural, almost sculptural, quality in the modern sense of the term.

This way of decomposing the face into geometric rhythms, concentric curves, and elemental volumes admirably illustrates the power of abstraction that characterizes Kifwebe traditions. Museum collections precisely emphasize the central role of grooves and geometric motifs in the visual identity of these masks.

A particularly striking piece, almost hypnotic, whose graphic boldness and radical forms confer an immediately recognizable presence.
