Baoule loom comb

An old wooden loom comb from Ivory Coast, decorated with a face. The weaving of cotton and raffia is a very ancient activity on the African continent. The fibers are generally spun by women, while weaving remains reserved for men. The technique of cotton weaving spread in West Africa thanks to the movements of the Dioulas. Before colonization, textiles made from cotton fiber, the latter described as "white gold", also served as a medium of exchange.Prestige adornments, the ceremonial woven loincloths, sometimes in large numbers, accompanied chiefs to their tombs, among the Kuba, but also among the Baoulé.
