The Tomado company was founded in 1923 in Dordrecht by the Van der Togt brothers.
Tomado stands for Van der Togt Massa Artikelen Dordrecht.
Originally it was a small company that manufactured simple copper-wire wallpaper hooks, which could be used to hang photos on wallpaper. After the Dutch Association of Housewives commissioned the company to develop a metal drainer, it began to grow and soon a factory was opened in Zwijndrecht. After World War II began the reconstruction period during which Tomado products symbolized the modern household. They became very popular, also in Belgium, and almost every household owned one or more Tomado products. Due to the brand's popularity, the company grew very quickly in the 1950s.
In the early 1970s the Tomado factories went bankrupt when a flood of cheap items from low-wage countries began to flood the market. The company was taken over by the Belgian firm Bekaert in the late 1970s. After Bekaert's bankruptcy in 1986, many rights were transferred to Metaltex Netherlands, part of the Swiss firm Metaltex.
