Description from the seller
Prestige cane / Carved ceremonial staff in patinated wood – West Africa (Baoulé / Akan Style)
Magnificent African prestige cane carved by hand in a dense, noble wood, featuring geometrical incisions and delicate twisted motifs.
Although the stylistic attributes evoke the Baoulé / Akan ethnic group (Ivory Coast), this type of dignitary or ceremonial staff is also found within neighboring traditions in West Africa.
Characteristics & Iconography
Pommel (Top): Sculpted elements in the shape of a gable/conically moulded with regular rings, serving as a grip. A fine metal wire (brass or copper) is clenched in a groove beneath the head.
Twisted Shaft & Serpent/Fish Heads: Just below the grip, the shaft opens to showcase remarkable spiral work. The start of the twist forms two stylized heads (snakes or fish) engraved with diamond-shaped eyes and hatch marks.
Incised Décor: Along the twisted shaft alternating geometric motifs — inset diamond friezes, chevrons (fishbone edges) and guilloches — engraved in relief with a stunning contrast between the carved wood and the dark patina.
Patina & Condition: Beautiful dark, satin patina of use on the shaft, indicating some age. The wood shows a lighter, natural tone on the grip section and the lower tip. Overall in very good condition, with slight signs of time that enhance its authenticity.
Height 104.5 cm
