Description from the seller

Bottle of the Passion / Calvary bottle – Popular religious art – late 19th / early 20th century

Rare and very decorative bottle of the Passion, also called a calvary bottle, a work of popular religious art probably made between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Inside the glass bottle is a miniature composition entirely realized and hand-assembled around a Christ on the cross.

The calvary is surrounded by numerous instruments and symbols of the Passion of Christ, among which two ladders, different tools, spears and small dice.

The composition is mainly made of polychrome wood, in tones of red, black, white, silver and gold.

The bottle is closed by an imposing wooden cork painted red, an integral part of the composition.

This type of object required remarkable patience: the various elements were inserted through the throat of the bottle and then assembled inside the bottle, according to a principle similar to that of ships in bottles.

Dating: around 1880-1910
Period: late 19th – early 20th century
Type: Passion bottle / calvary bottle
Materials: glass, polychrome wood and metal
Style: popular religious art

Old condition with patina, interior dust and wear to the polychromy corresponding to the age of the object. The photographs are an integral part of the description.

Very beautiful object of curiosity and popular devotion, interesting for a collection of popular art, antique religious objects, or a cabinet of curiosities.
