Antique Italian wall mirror dating to circa 1850–1900, with a wooden Renaissance Revival frame and a glass mirror plate, in used condition with probable small missing pieces.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Elegant antique Italian wall mirror dating from the late 19th century, approximately 1870–1900.

The mirror features an architectural wooden frame in the Renaissance Revival or Italian Neo-Renaissance style, with stepped mouldings, projecting geometric corners and applied floral and foliate decoration. The dark aged finish and naturally developed patina enhance the depth of the carved and moulded details, giving the piece a strong historic character.

The antique mirror plate displays extensive natural foxing, oxidation and areas of desilvering developed over many decades. These age-related variations create a beautifully atmospheric reflection and are an important part of the mirror’s authentic antique appearance. The glass is believed to be original to the frame, although its precise silvering technique cannot be determined with certainty.

The reverse retains two substantial vertical wooden backboards secured with old nails. Their construction, wear and natural shrinkage are consistent with the late 19th-century dating and support the originality of the mirror and its components.

The frame is in good antique condition and remains structurally sound. It displays losses to some of the applied decorative elements, areas of finish wear, small cracks and other imperfections consistent with more than a century of age. These details are visible in the photographs and contribute to the piece’s genuine patina rather than detracting from its decorative presence.

This antique mirror would make a distinctive focal point above a console, chest of drawers or fireplace, and is particularly suitable for Renaissance Revival, Victorian, eclectic, dark academia and classical interiors.

Dimensions: approximately 70 cm in height and 50 cm in width.
