Description from the seller
Large model of a carved bone altar – a work of monastic patience, 19th century. One-of-a-kind piece.
Impressive scale model depicting a church altar entirely made of carved bone, with remarkable finesse of execution.
The ensemble depicts a full altarpiece with central tabernacle, summit cross, steps, candelabra, liturgical pulpits, sacred vases and altar rails. The open architectural decoration, very rich, is in a neo-Gothic vocabulary, with a multitude of miniaturized details executed by hand.
This type of work, often referred to as a “patience work,” is generally attributed to monastic workshops or 19th-century artisans, often in Alpine regions (Tyrol, Bavaria, Switzerland) or Central Europe. The quality and complexity of this piece place it well above ordinary productions.
Dimensions: L 46 cm – H 45 cm
Material: carved bone (probably bovine bone)
Era: 19th century
Condition: good overall given the extreme fragility, with a few small losses and wear.
Rare piece, with strong decorative presence, ideal for a collection of religious art or a cabinet of curiosities.
Photos are an integral part of the object description and complement its presentation. They allow one to assess its condition and characteristics. Please examine them carefully before any commitment.
The transport of this unique object must be organized and borne by the buyer.
