Description from the seller
Original Art Deco Table Lamp / Boudoir Lamp with Celluloid Shade and Bakelite – 1930s
A stunning and iconic Art Deco table lamp (also known as a boudoir lamp or bedside lamp) from the 1930s. This authentic design piece is a beautiful example of the geometric forms and the innovative use of materials from the early European modernist period.
The lamp features an elegant, ribbed swan-neck arm made of metal, equipped with a smoothly functioning hinge. This allows the lampshade to be tilted completely: from a focused, functional desk lamp to a atmospheric tulip lamp that softly disperses light upward.
Premium Materials & Unique Condition
The Base: A highly decorative and heavy stepped base, fabricated from a contrasting combination of authentic dark brown marbled Bakelite underside and base. The Bakelite exhibits the deep, warm glow characteristic of early plastics.
The Shade: A rare star-shaped shade built from eight panels of celluloid (mica-look), meticulously stitched together with an original stitching cord. Celluloid is an extremely early type of plastic that is highly sensitive to heat. It is therefore exceptionally rare for this shade to have survived the passage of time without the usual shrinkage, cracks or scorch marks.
Up-to-date & Immediately Safe to Use
For safety in a modern interior, this lamp has been expertly fitted in the past with new, safe black wiring, a cord switch and a modern EU plug. You need not worry about the risks of old, degraded wiring; the lamp complies with contemporary safety standards.
Important usage advice: Due to its historical value and the heat sensitivity of the celluloid shade, the lamp should only be used with a modern E14 LED bulb (low wattage). A suitable LED light source is included so you can enjoy this unique atmosphere-maker immediately.
