Description from the seller
Elegant and rare pair of French Empire period silver salt cellars with winged griffin supports and original glass liners. The model represents a classic form of Parisian table silver from the Napoleonic era.
Each stand is finely cast and supported by winged griffins, with a decorative rim holding the original period glass inserts. The design reflects the neoclassical aesthetic typical of early 19th-century French decorative arts.
The pieces bear clear French hallmarks:
-Coq 1 standard mark (950/1000 silver)
-Paris garantie mark
-Lozenge-shaped maker’s mark “PL” with floral motif, attributed to the Paris silversmith Pierre-Nicolas Lenoir
These hallmarks date the pieces to Paris, between 1798 and 1809, during the Directoire and early Empire period.
Salt cellars of this griffin-supported model were typical elements of refined Empire dining services and remain highly collectible examples of Napoleonic-era silver.
