Description from the seller
Franco ALBINI and Franca Helg
Edited by Marianna Guernieri
Texts by Lorenzo Campagna and Cecilia Da Pozzo
Franco Albini was a master of Italian Rationalism, able to fuse technical precision with an almost artisanal craftmanship style and a modern, rigorous architectural vision. His entire career moved along a single, precise through-line: the search for essence through formal reduction, turning every project into a lesson in coherence and constructive honesty. He did not merely design buildings; he rethought how people interact with space and objects, elevating the concept of “lightness” to great heights, where the structure itself becomes an aesthetic element.
In his architectural works, such as the Pirovano Refuge in Cervinia or the Strada Nuova Museums in Genoa, Albini demonstrated extraordinary sensitivity in dialoguing contemporary language with preexisting historical or environmental contexts. This same attitude is found in his design work, where pieces like the Fiorenza chair or the Veliero bookshelf defy the laws of physics through a play of tensions and transparencies that make the object seem almost ethereal. For Albini, design was never decoration but the result of an analytical process aimed at solving functional problems with mathematical elegance.
His contribution to the city of Milan was fundamental, culminating in the Line 1 metro project, where he managed to create a visual and spatial identity unmatched for clarity and functionality. Working for decades alongside Franca Helg, he trained generations of designers, leaving behind a method based on conscious “doing” and the social responsibility of the architect. Today his work continues to be studied as a perfect example of timeless modernity, able to stay relevant thanks to its intrinsic logical integrity.
