Description from the seller
Rare and authentic sampler from 1807, a masterpiece of embroidery carefully done by hand on linen canvas, signed by the young Mary Ann Dryden.
This specimen is a historical testimony from the early 19th century. In the center, enclosed by elegant floral garlands, lies a moralistic poetic composition dedicated to the snowdrop, symbol of truth and modesty. The execution is refined, with a deft use of embroidery stitches for the letters, numbers, and foliate decorations.
Dating: 1807 (original period piece).
Creator: Mary Ann Dryden.
Technique: Cross-stitch embroidery on linen canvas.
Dimensions: 29 x 27 (internal); 37 x 36 cm (external)
Verse (poem): "The modest snowdrop, emblem of fair truth, / Conveys this lesson to the thoughtless youth: / That unassuming worth will ever find / A warm reception in a generous mind!"
Frame: Original or period dark-wood frame (e.g. mahogany or dark wood) with a rounded profile, preserving the authentic atmosphere of the era.
Condition: Excellent state of conservation for a piece over 200 years old. The colors of the threads, though naturally faded over time, retain excellent legibility. Canvas intact, no tears.
