Hand fan - Silk, Bone - French Rococo

French fan with original gilded wooden case – mid 19th century (c. 1850–1860)

Refined French fan from the mid-19th century, complete with its precious original hinged gilded wooden case, shaped like a crescent, with green velvet lining, made for the preservation and exhibition of the work.

The hand-painted silk page is decorated with an elegant Rococo-inspired scene set in a natural landscape. The composition depicts four figures in 18th-century clothing: three ladies gathered around a stone pedestal and a young gentleman, elegantly dressed, placed on the right with a theatrical gesture, in an atmosphere of conversation and entertainment typical of the French fêtes galantes.

The background is enriched by delicate vegetation with shrubs, flowering branches and landscape details executed with notable finesse, while the pastel-toned palette – pinks, grays, blues and greens – gives the whole piece great elegance and harmony.

At the bottom of the decoration, near the pedestal, the artist’s signature is present, a detail that further embellishes the fan and increases its collectible interest.

The mount is finely pierced with ornamental motifs of great refinement, in perfect harmony with mid-19th-century French taste.

The original case constitutes a significant added value: in addition to preserving the fan over time, it makes it a refined piece of furniture and a highly attractive display item.

Conditions
Good overall condition, with natural signs of time consistent with the period. The page shows slight wear and a small loss near the central pin, without compromising the aesthetic impact of the work. The case preserves the original gilding with normal abrasions and patina due to age. The photographs form an integral part of the description.
