AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

This book on Albania published in Italy in 1940 is absolutely unattainable elsewhere on the Internet. 190 pages and about 150 black-and-white photographs, text in Italian by Giuseppe Massani. Hardcover with publisher's boards.
The book is in good general condition, even though given its age it shows some aging wear and signs of sunning (see photo) but it is an extremely precious book considering its extreme rarity.

Giuseppe Massani is an Italian photographer born in 1901. After studying at the University of Bologna from 1920, Massani became a fervent supporter of the fascist movement then on the rise in Italy and became known thanks to a first photo album devoted to Mussolini and to Italian fascism, La sua terra [His land], published in Bergamo in 1936. He then undertook to publish albums on various regions of Italy: Sicily in 1938 and Liguria in 1939. In April 1939, Albania was invaded by the Italian army and, shortly after, integrated into Mussolini's new Roman Empire. Probably with the support of the Italian government, he toured Albania in 1940 and produced some of the most beautiful black-and-white photographs taken in that country. The book consists of two distinct parts. The first part concerns the landscapes and cities of Albania as well as the populations and their way of life. The second part, titled “The Italo–Albanian Union,” presents the presence of fascist Italy in the country. It is specified on the title page that this book is published under the auspices of the Undersecretariat for Albanian Affairs. The photographic archives of the Undersecretariat of State for Albanian Affairs, a collection of about 7,000 photographs distributed across 66 binders, are today preserved in the Historical Archives of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
