The development is covered from the early 13th century with water clocks and hourglasses to the early modern period of the twentieth century with atomic clocks and radio-controlled timekeeping instruments. The developmental history, from gatekeeper clocks, clocks for use in homes, tower clocks, and specialized accurate timepieces for various scientific and societal purposes.
A wide range of clock types is discussed in detail, as well as their origins regionally and nationally. Technical forgeries, materials, restorations, names of clockmakers, etc. pass under review.
