Unknown artist - New Millennium 2000

The image was purchased directly from the artist in 1999 near the town of Arusha in Tanzania. It is a polychrome painting on hardboard, with a frame made from a rectangular timber mounted and color-coated. The painting shows, in the left part, rural life in front of a landscape with Mount Kilimanjaro. Two rural workers with tools for tilling the soil, as well as a water-drinking chicken and a white cat, are depicted. This is reflected, just as a female figure with a calabash on her head, in a water surface before the setting sun. A peasant moves toward a simple hut made of clay, in front of which a female person processes maize by pounding to prepare a traditional dish.
The right half of the image documents the modern, digital world in Tanzania, presumably in Dar es Salaam. A red clocktower, above which a large airplane of the Tanzanian airline takes off. Several people in business attire are depicted, talking on phones or typing on a computer. In the upper right of the image, a freighter with goods for export is being prepared.
Inside the painting’s title there is a color division: the parts on the left, where rural life is predominantly shown, are kept white, whereas the right side is rendered in red.
