An early 20th‑century set of four precision specific-gravity measuring instruments in blown glass with metal and paper components, calibrated for use at 15 °C and housed in their original fitted case, dating to circa 1900–1930 in an industrial style.
Description from the seller
An early 20th-century specific-gravity measuring set, dating approximately to 1900–1930, consisting of four precision blown-glass instruments preserved together in their original fitted case.
The instruments have differently shaped bulbs, weighted ends and finely graduated glass stems, indicating that the individual pieces were intended to cover different specific-gravity or density ranges.
Importantly, the instruments are calibrated for use at 15 °C, a reference temperature historically used for specific-gravity and density measurements. This supports their identification as functional precision measuring instruments rather than simply laboratory glassware.
The set is made primarily from blown glass with weighted ends, while the original fitted case has a dark exterior and a shaped, fabric-lined interior individually formed to hold each instrument. The survival of the instruments together with their purpose-made case makes the set particularly attractive as a historical scientific object.
One of the larger instruments carries the marking “250”, while numerical graduations and the 15 °C calibration indication remain visible on the stems.
The precise original application is not documented, but instruments of this type were used for determining the specific gravity of liquids in laboratory, pharmaceutical, chemical and industrial contexts.
Condition:
Good antique condition considering the age and fragile nature of the glass instruments. The glass shows minor age-related marks and deposits. The fitted case shows visible wear, staining and ageing to the lining and exterior, consistent with its age.
The instruments have not been scientifically tested or checked for calibration accuracy and are offered as historical scientific/collectible instruments.
Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
Details
Number of instruments: 4
Case dimensions: approx. 20 × 10.5 × 4 cm
Total weight including case: 366 g
A fascinating surviving set of early precision measuring equipment, particularly suitable for collectors of historical scientific instruments, laboratory equipment, pharmacy history and measurement technology.
