Description from the seller
Beautiful antique sewing/working table, also known as a “travailleuse,” with drop leaves, dating to the second half of the 19th century (roughly in the Louis-Philippe or Umbertine style). It features a rich veneer in flame mahogany and walnut root, characterized by very warm, bright, high-contrast figured grain. The piece uses a Bandelle (Drop Leaf) construction; the rectangular top is equipped with fold-down side leaves that, when raised, extend the supporting surface. Under the top there is a front drawer (with key), historically used to hold threads, needles, and sewing or embroidery tools. Lift-top: the upper lid opens upward and contains an original inset mirror inside, with inner compartments; the main compartment is divided into several small side compartments (open compartments), originally designed to neatly organize sewing, embroidery, letters, or vanity cosmetics. It rests on shaped side supports and elegantly turned baluster legs, connected in the center by a balustered cross-member (stretcher) with pivoting wheels. Completely original piece from the late 19th century in very good condition. The measurements given are with the leaves closed; with the leaves raised, the table length increases from 60 cm to 93 cm.
