6 layer chevron beads - 18th-19th century - Murano/West Africa

Six-layer Chevron African trade bead necklace – multilayer Venetian glass – Late 19th / early 20th century

Magnificent set of antique African trade beads of the Chevron (Rosetta) type, crafted in multilayer Venetian glass and used on West African trade routes.

The necklace consists of large beads, about 25 mm in diameter in the main pieces, decorated with the characteristic oval motifs in cobalt blue and white on a red ground. The beads show a visible multilayer construction in several spots, typical of the traditional Chevron manufacturing technique.

There is a uniform, authentic wear from use and age, with abrasions, small losses and chipping in keeping with long circulation. The slightly irregular shapes and the overall patina are consistent with antique trade beads and not with contemporary productions.

The strand appears to have been restrung in Africa using traditional plant fiber, forming a necklace with great presence and ethnographic value.
