Russian Orthodox four-panel travel altar – 19th century – bronze/brass and enamel
Beautiful and richly detailed Russian Orthodox four-panel travel altar (skladen) from the 19th century, executed in cast bronze/brass with polychrome enamel.
The altar consists of four hinged panels with numerous relief depictions from Orthodox Christian iconography, including the Crucifixion of Christ, liturgical feasts, and various saints.
The depictions are enlivened with enamel in blue, turquoise/green, white and black and bear Church Slavonic/Cyrillic inscriptions. On the reverse of one of the central panels there is also a richly worked religious scene with a cross and inscriptions.
An attractive and imposing example of 19th-century Russian metal icon art, notable also for its large size and extensive iconography.
