William Morris (Walthamstow, March 24, 1834 – London, October 3, 1896) was a British artist and writer.

Strawberry Thief reproduces one of William Morris’s most recognizable designs and, in our view, is also the most iconic Arts and Crafts work. He originally created the tapestry after watching birds stealing strawberries from the garden of his Gloucestershire home, Kelmscott Manor.

Morris was among the leading founders of the Arts and Crafts movement; he is considered a forerunner of modern designers and had a notable influence on architecture and architects of his time.

Many regard him as the father of the Modern Movement, although he was not an architect himself. He founded a design studio in collaboration with the artist Edward Burne-Jones and the poet and artist Dante Gabriel Rossetti, who deeply influenced church and home decoration in the twentieth century. He also contributed to the revival of traditional textile arts and their production methods.
