Romantic-era card table from Europe, likely Portugal, dating to 1850–1900, in wood with myrtle veneer, 76 × 80 × 38 cm, in good condition with minor signs of wear and stains and the interior green felt needing replacement.
Description from the seller
Romantic game table. Europe, probably Portuguese, from the 19th century, Romantic period, in figured boxwood veneer wood. Rectangular, hinged top, opening to reveal the interior intended for the game, lined with green felt. A sober-line box resting on a two-column support with turned sections, joined by a lower locking device, ending in cut and stylized feet. The top features a symmetric composition and construction adapted to its function, allowing it to be closed when not in use. The use of boxwood veneer, a wood appreciated in 19th-century Portuguese furniture for its tone and the distinctive grain pattern, gives the piece decorative interest and places it within high-quality Romantic-period furniture production. This is a piece of furniture conceived specifically for domestic entertainment, intended for card games or other table games, combining a practical and decorative function. The hinged-top solution is characteristic of 19th-century gaming tables, allowing the occupied space to be significantly reduced when closed. The two-column structure, the lower locking, and the cut-out foot design provide stability and a distinctly 19th-century character, while the relatively restrained decoration approaches Romantic furniture solutions of English influence that had wide diffusion in Portugal during the 19th century. Signs of use and damage compatible with age. Interior felt in need of replacement. Dimensions: 76 × 80 × 38 cm.
