Description from the seller
An important Italian photobook by Giulia Pirelli and Carlo Orsi, published by Bruno Alfieri Editore in Milan in 1965. The book contains 54 black-and-white photogravures depicting Milan during the rapid social and economic transformation of the 1960s.
Pirelli and Orsi photograph the city’s streets, workers, new architecture, advertising, department stores, railway stations and suburban development, presenting Milan as the dynamic and increasingly cosmopolitan centre of post-war Italy. The photographs combine documentary observation with the graphic sophistication and visual energy characteristic of 1960s Italian design.
With an introductory text by celebrated Italian writer Dino Buzzati and graphic design by Giancarlo Iliprandi. The large-format book is notable for its rich gravure printing and distinctive photographic boards.
Milano is included in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger’s influential The Photobook: A History, Volume I and is regarded as a scarce and highly collectible example of post-war Italian photography and book design.
