An Italian Art Nouveau bed frame from the early 1900s, constructed in cast iron and wrought iron, comprising four pieces (two headboards and two footboards) that can be joined to form a double bed or used as two single beds, featuring mother-of-pearl inlays and Japanese-style medallions, in used condition with some wear and probable small missing parts.
Description from the seller
Italian Liberty-style bed, early 1900s, made of iron and cast iron, with Japanese-inspired decoration.
COMPOSITION
Four pieces: two headboards and two footboards, equipped with a central interlock pin that allows them to be joined. They can therefore be used in two ways: when paired they form a double bed, when separated they form two twin beds. Only the side rails and the bed slats are missing, and can be custom-made by a blacksmith.
DECORATION
Openwork filigree with Liberty-style floral motifs on the crown moldings and lower bands. Faux-wood panels with mother-of-pearl inlays framed by inlays, still intact and fully iridescent, alternating with chrysanthemum-gilded rosettes. Each footboard bears a medallion painted in Japanese style with female figures in kimono, fans, pines, and Mount Fuji: the two scenes are different from each other.
MEASUREMENTS
Headboards: 83 x 180 cm
Footboards: 83 x 112 cm
Overall width when joined: 163 cm
CONDITION
Conserved, to be conservatively restored. The structure is intact and stable. The mother-of-pearl decorations and the medallions are largely legible; there are color losses on the raised parts of the engravings, abrasions and halos on the panels, all visible in the photos, taken in natural light and without retouching.
The pieces have NEVER been varnished, sanded, or repainted: they retain the original surface, a condition that allows proper restoration.
Pickup in Milan. Shipping at the buyer's expense, packaging on a pallet to be agreed upon.
