Sculpture in marble powder depicting the head of Eros.
The artwork, of Hellenistic origin, was discovered in 1772 in Centocelle (Rome), from which it takes its name; it is also known as the Eros of Centocelle.
It was purchased by Pope Clement XIV and consequently displayed in the Hall of Busts and Statues of the Vatican Museums, where it is preserved to this day.
In 1800, for a short period, the Eros of Centocelle was also exhibited at the Louvre after Napoleon Bonaparte's acquisition by Pope Pius VI within the framework of the Treaty of Tolentino.
A professional academic sculpture, completely handmade by skilled artisans. A piece from a museum plaster-cast collection. The workmanship has very ancient origins, and is executed entirely by hand by sculptors, made with materials such as scagliola and Carrara marble powder.
