The ES series SACD player, developed as a reference player.
It supports multichannel SACD playback, allowing playback of 5.1ch multichannel discs in addition to standard stereo playback.
The D/A conversion section features a newly developed Super Audio D/A converter.
This converter is a single-chip device integrating a DSD filter, a CD digital filter, and a new multilevel D/A converter. In particular, the multilevel D/A converter consists of 67 1-bit D/A converters per channel, and the overall output is obtained by combining (integrating) the individual outputs. In addition, even when obtaining the same output level, the combination of converters that are turned ON is randomized each time, preventing the converter's idiosyncrasies—caused by a fixed combination—from affecting the sound and achieving distortion leveling.
Furthermore, because this multilevel D/A converter method does not require ultra-high-speed operation from each individual converter, digital noise generation is suppressed, providing the benefit of being less likely to affect the analog audio circuitry.
It employs the TRI Power D/A Converter System, which significantly improves the S/N ratio during stereo playback.
In this method, the six channels of D/A converters installed for multichannel SACD playback are utilized, with three channels of D/A converters allocated to each of the two channels for D/A conversion. When the outputs of three converters per channel are combined, the music signal triples, but the noise, being a random component, only increases by √3 times, allowing for a significant improvement in the relative S/N ratio.
The pickup section employs a twin-laser pickup.
In addition, the servo circuit uses a high-precision digital servo.
The power supply section employs R-core transformers with low leakage flux and vibration, with a total of two units installed—one for the audio system and one for the digital/control system—suppressing digital noise interference with the audio circuitry.
Gold-plated terminals are used for the analog output terminals.
It is equipped with a multichannel management function, featuring setting programs corresponding to eight anticipated speaker environments.
With this function, the following can be selected: multichannel direct output, 5ch large speakers + subwoofer, 5ch large speakers, 5ch small speakers + subwoofer, front large speakers + small center/surround speakers + subwoofer, front large speakers + small center/surround speakers, no-center large speakers + subwoofer, and no-center large speakers.
