Antique electric doorbell with visible electromagnet – wood & metal – circa 1920–1940
A special and decorative piece of early electrical engineering: this antique electric doorbell is mounted on a wooden installation plate and equipped with a large metal bell, an electromagnetic mechanism and a wooden cover case.
What makes this specimen extra attractive is that the technical inner workings are fully visible. Under the wooden cap there are two nicely wound electromagnetic coils with green insulated wire, combined with a mechanical contact arm, adjustment screw and stroke mechanism. As soon as the coils are energized, the armature is drawn in and the clapper strikes the metal bell.
The design and construction fit with electric bells from the early part of the 20th century, presumably around 1920–1940. In this period such bells were used in homes, shops, offices and workshops, often powered via low voltage or a bell transformer.
