Description from the seller
commemorative porcelain plate with Picasso engraving “Toritos fritos,” limited to 1,000 copies, 1980 – Segovia, Spain
Excellent commemorative plate made by the Gil Vargas factory, in Segovia. It features a drawing created in 1957 by the acclaimed painter, who titled it “Toritos fritos,” where a glass appears on the left, next to it a carafe with wine and below a plate full of miniature bulls, all in black on a white background. In the lower right corner is Picasso’s signature and the date of the original drawing. The figures are imperfect, drawn with a quick and improvised stroke, and somewhat schematic.
On the back of the plate is inscribed [On the occasion of the First Centenary of Pablo Picasso’s birth, 1,000 copies of this plate have been made with the impression of his drawing “Toritos Fritos,” / October 25, 1980] and stamped by the factory. Although the painter’s first centenary was in 1981, commemorative events began in 1980. This is an exclusive and limited edition, with copies that are difficult to find.
The Gil Vargas factory was founded in 1861 in Segovia, specializing in ceramic and porcelain objects. Better known as Fábrica de loza La Segoviana, since its founding it was recognized nationwide, employing more than 170 workers. It specialized in ceramics with calcographic decorations (as in this case) and decorations with gold leaf. Its pieces were very popular.
