Description from the seller
Antique double-inkstand Writing Inkstand "Memory of Venice" with Lion of Saint Mark and Sirens - Bronze - Fine '800
Elegant and refined antique double-inkstand, dating from the late 19th century or early 20th century.
The object is entirely made in heavy metal casting (probably bronze or patinated brass), characterized by a splendid original dark patina of the period that enhances the three-dimensionality of the details. The structure features rich figurative decoration of eclectic taste, suspended between Neo-Baroque classicism and the sinuous lines of Art Nouveau:
Sides: Two splendid figures of mermaids, counterposed and finely modeled, whose tails wrap around the sides of the inkstand, also serving as elegant ornamental handles.
Center (Iconography of Saint Mark): The shell-shaped ink trough houses a magnificent bas-relief depicting the Lion of Saint Mark, symbol of the city of Venice. The winged lion is shown with the aureola (nimbate) and with the front right paw resting on the open book of the Gospel.
Reliefs inscriptions: At the lower part of the shell, just beneath the lion figure, there is a serpentine cartouche with the raised inscription "RICORDO" on the left side and, although more worn by time, the indication "DI VENEZIA" on the right. This detail identifies the object as a precious and historic luxury souvenir of the Grand Tour from the late Victorian era.
Reservoirs: Two removable octagonal inkwells with hinged lids, decorated with a geometric lattice pattern. A collectible piece of great charm, perfect to enrich a presidential desk, a notary’s study, or as a refined period furnishing object.
