A pair of large wall frames in deeply carved, gilt and patinated solid wood, in a Neo-Baroque / Rococo Revival style from Greece, dating to circa 1850–1900, each 60 × 43 × 14 cm, with movable glazed oval medallions suspended inside the frames, in good used condition with signs of age.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Important pair of large wall frames or decorative wall cartouches, made of deeply carved, pierced and gilt/patinated solid wood, in an elaborate Rococo Revival / Neo-Baroque style.

Each frame is richly decorated with acanthus leaves, scrolling foliage, ribbon-like motifs, berries and openwork carving. The two pieces form a matched pair: they share the same overall design and proportions, while showing small differences in the carved details consistent with hand-crafted production.

At the centre of each cartouche is an independent oval medallion frame, suspended from a small metal hook. The oval inserts are therefore movable and swing freely within the larger carved structure. They contain glazed romantic figurative scenes depicting elegant ladies with dogs in landscapes.

The lot includes both outer carved frames and the two suspended oval medallions with their images.

Materials and construction
Carved and pierced solid wood

Gilt and patinated finish

Glazed oval medallions

Internal metal suspension hooks

Hanging loops to the reverse

Dimensions
Approximate dimensions of each frame:

Height: 60 cm

Width: 43 cm

Depth: 14 cm

Dating and origin
Proposed dating: 19th to early 20th century, to be attributed.

The reverse bears handwritten annotations in Greek characters. These inscriptions have not been fully deciphered or attributed. The pieces may be connected to the Greek or Eastern Mediterranean area, but no definitive attribution is claimed.

Condition
The pair is in antique condition, with an attractive aged patina. There are signs of age and use, including surface wear, rubbing and losses to the gilded finish, dust deposits in the carved recesses, and small chips or losses to some of the most protruding and fragile carved elements.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of this description. The pieces will be packed with particular care, but due to their size, depth and fragile openwork carving, collection in person or professional shipping is recommended.
