Description from the seller
Table clock, white marble and ormolu, Directory, 19th century - France
Typology: Table clock
Machinery: Paris
Period: 19th century
Style: Directory
Country: France
Materials: White marble and ormolu
With key
No expert appraisal
Double chimes, bell missing
Good condition given its age and use
Dimensions: 47 x 30.5 x 9.5 cm
Elegant table clock made of white marble with beautiful ormolu decorations, of Directory style and period, thus originating from 19th century France.
It features a two-column structure resting on a rectangular plinth with bronze gilt, ormolu applications. These two supports are adorned with ormolu vegetal garlands. In the center hangs the white enamel dial, Arabic numerals and filigree hands, topped by a cup from which chains hang to two medals with drawings. These flank the dial and there are small framed paintings of female figures, probably added in a later period. Inside it houses a Paris-type movement with double chiming, preserving its original key but requiring a new bell.
About the Directory style
The Directory style is a furniture and decorative style developed in France during the period when the Directory was in force (1795-1799) and marks the transition between Louis XVI and Empire styles. It is a Neoclassical-inspired style, characterized by its simple lines, inspired by Roman objects of the 1st century AD, from the excavations of Pompeii and Herculaneum. This revival of classical taste was present in painting, furniture and fashion, especially in women's clothing.
During this period, France experienced significant political and social changes, which was reflected in furniture with a more rational and functional approach. Symmetry in drawer design and the balanced proportion of the furniture as a whole are key characteristics of classic furniture of these eras. Unlike earlier styles, such as Rococo, the Directory is characterized by more restrained decoration. Drawer pulls and legs feature simple geometric details and classical motifs.
