Set of 4 antique wooden band boxes / 'Bentwood' storage boxes – Shaker style – 19th century

Beautiful and characterful set of four antique, hand-made band boxes (bentwood boxes) in different grades and sizes. These distinctive storage boxes are made from carefully steamed and bent wood (almost certainly maple or pine) and carry a beautiful, well-aged patina.

This type of box has become world-famous through the American Shaker communities, but it also has a rich historical tradition in Europe as traditional cheese, hat, or pantry boxes.

The construction is characteristically artisanal: the wood is interlocked with so-called 'swallowtail' joints and secured with bamboo.

Condition
The boxes are in authentic antique condition with a beautiful aged patina. There are normal signs of age and use around them, such as shrinkage cracks, light stains in the wood, and wear to the edges, which contribute to the historical charm of the set.
