Decorative vintage coffee grinder with cast iron milling mechanism and Delft blue mill decoration

A particularly atmospheric vintage hand coffee grinder that beautifully combines functionality with typical Dutch decoration. This grinder has a robust, classically constructed metal and cast iron milling installation, mounted on a wooden cabinet with Delft blue-adorned images of Dutch windmills and landscapes around it.

On top there is a large ornately executed cast iron flywheel with a wooden handle. Through the gear mechanism the vertical grinding mechanism is driven. The grind setting can be adjusted at the top with the spring-loaded adjustment screw. The coffee beans are placed in the round metal supply chamber, after which they are ground manually.

At the front there is a small wooden catch tray with a decorative metal button, into which the ground coffee falls. The combination of warm wood, dark cast iron, brass-colored accents, and the blue-and-white mill decoration makes this a striking collectible and decorative object.

The photos also nicely show that the grinding mechanism has actually been used: inside there are still some old coffee beans. This underlines that it was not made solely as decoration, but as a functional coffee grinder.

Details

The grinder features a heavily constructed metal grinding mechanism with visible conical gears, a large open-worked flywheel, and a wooden turning handle. The four corners of the cabinet are finished with wooden columns.

The ceramic or ceramic-like panels are decorated with various Dutch windmills, rendered in blue on white. This gives the coffee grinder the pronounced look of a classic Dutch souvenir and household object from the second half of the 20th century.

Condition

The coffee grinder is in a nice vintage state with appropriate signs of use and aging. On the cast iron there are locally light discolorations and patina, which suit the age and industrial look. The wood shows a few small signs of wear.

The grinding mechanism is present and complete as far as visible in the photos. The rotating parts, gears, grinding work, catch tray, and wooden handle are present.
